Good casting suppliers ask RFQ questions about drawings, alloy, quantity, machining, finish and inspection to reduce tooling and production risk.

Most RFQs that land in a casting factory’s inbox are a drawing and a one-line message: “Quote this.” The reply looks easy: a price, a delivery promise, a handshake. But a serious casting supplier responds differently. They come back with questions — often several rounds of them. Before you read that as slow or difficult, consider what is actually happening. A casting factory is not quoting a part. It is quoting a process. And the process decision gets made before any metal is poured.

A good casting supplier asks questions because the cost of a wrong assumption is far higher than the cost of a question. This article explains what those questions are really about, where the silent quote goes wrong, and how a buyer should respond.

The Quote Is a Process Decision, Not a Price Decision

Machining a part from a solid block is predictable. The material is already what it will be. Casting is different. The metal is melted, poured, and solidified. Along the way it shrinks, it can trap gas, and its internal structure changes depending on how it cools. That behavior is driven by the part geometry, the alloy, the mold method, and the gating system that feeds liquid metal into the cavity.

This is why the drawing alone is never enough. The drawing defines the final shape and the tolerances. It does not define the best way to get there. Two foundries can quote the same drawing with completely different methods, depending on what they assume. The one that asks questions is working out which assumptions are safe. The one that quotes the same day is guessing.

Waking runs every inquiry through the same three-step flow: the customer sends drawings and requirements, the engineering team reviews the part, and only then does the quote get written. That review step exists for a reason. It is the cheapest quality control a casting will ever receive, because it happens before any tooling is cut or any metal is melted.

What the Questions Are Really About

When a casting supplier asks about your part, they are looking for six pieces of information.

  • The application. Where does the part go in service? A valve body, a pump impeller, an automotive housing, and an industrial machinery part all live different lives. Waking casts stainless steel valve bodies and impellers in 304, 316, CF8, and CF8M, and it casts carbon steel, alloy steel, and aluminum alloy parts for automotive and industrial customers. The application tells the foundry which stresses and service conditions the casting must survive.
  • The material story. Some drawings specify a wrought grade that was never meant to be cast. Others specify a casting grade without checking whether it suits the corrosion or temperature requirement. A material question is often a service-condition question in disguise.
  • The pressure function. If the part will hold pressure, the foundry needs to know before quoting. Waking performs leak testing on pressure-containing parts, and its X-ray NDT equipment (an XTH320 unit) screens for internal porosity and shrinkage. Whether those inspections are required changes both the method and the price. The question is not the supplier being difficult. It is the supplier asking what could go wrong so it can be prevented.
  • The machined surfaces. Which features get machined after casting, and which run as-cast? This decides the machining allowance, the datum surfaces, and the CNC workload. Waking runs its own CNC machining on more than 400 machines in the same facility, so this question is practical, not academic.
  • The inspection expectation. Do you need first article inspection, sample approval, material certificates, and batch traceability? Waking’s quality lab carries two CMM systems (COORD3 and ZEISS SPECTRUM), an inverted metallurgical microscope for material structure analysis, a pendulum impact tester with low-temperature capability, plus hardness and roundness/profile measuring instruments. Which of these get used on your part depends on what the part does and what you ask for.
  • The volume and timing. Order size changes tooling decisions, process choices, and unit cost. Buyers should confirm exact lead time and MOQ with the supplier for their specific part, because those numbers depend on geometry and quantity — not on a brochure. A supplier who asks about volume is deciding how to set up the job.

Where Skipping the Questions Hurts

The consequences of a silent quote show up later, and they show up in three places.

Porosity. Porosity is one of the most common casting defects, and much of it is invisible on the surface. A drawing does not tell a foundry where internal voids are acceptable and where they are not. Buyers who skip the questions end up with castings that pass the dimensional check but leak, fail under pressure, or crack during machining. X-ray inspection exists to find these defects before shipment. The questions exist so the foundry knows which defects actually matter for your part.

Machining. If the foundry does not know which surfaces will be machined, it guesses the allowance. Guess too small, and the machined surface does not clean up; you get pits or scale in a finished area. Guess too large, and you pay for extra material plus the machining time to remove it. Same drawing, same part — the only difference was the question that never got asked.

Tolerances. Investment casting holds good tolerances, but it does not hold machined tolerances. If a critical feature needs tight control, it needs a post-cast machining operation or a different mold approach. The supplier who asks which features are critical is trying to avoid promising something the process will not hold.

None of those problems appear in the quote. They appear in the delivery, or later in service. The difference between a responsive quote and an interrogating quote is usually the difference between a plan and a hope.

What the Factory Does With Your Answers

The answers feed the engineering review, and that review decides the whole job.

First, it decides the casting method. At Waking, stainless steel, carbon steel, and alloy steel parts run through the silica sol investment casting line — also called lost wax casting. Aluminum parts go through low-pressure casting or gravity casting, depending on geometry and volume. The method choice is not cosmetic. It determines how the metal feeds, how it solidifies, and what internal quality you get.

Second, it decides the inspection plan. A pressure-containing part gets treated differently from a structural housing. First article inspection verifies the dimensional setup before the batch runs. The sample approval process locks the production standard. Traceability links every batch to material certificates and inspection reports. These are not add-ons to the process. They are its output, and they only work if the input was complete.

Third, it decides the finishing steps. Deburring, cleaning, polishing, passivation, anodizing, plating, coating, and heat treatment are all part of a casting supplier’s toolkit. Each one exists because the part demands it, not because a drawing says so. The question round at the front end is what sorts that out.

How to Make the RFQ Conversation Work for You

Treat the question round as a free engineering consultation. That is exactly what it is.

  • Send a complete drawing with material grade, tolerances, and surface finish requirements written down. Do not expect the supplier to infer them from a 3D model alone.
  • State the application and service conditions, even if it feels like extra information. “This is a valve body for a water system” is worth a sentence. “This is a valve body for a chemical line with periodic pressure spikes” is worth a volume of drawings.
  • Mark the critical-to-quality features. If one surface seals against another part, say so. That one sentence guides the machining approach and the inspection plan.
  • Answer questions in writing. The RFQ correspondence becomes the technical baseline. If a problem shows up later, the email record settles what was agreed — and what was not.
  • Use the questions as a screen. A casting supplier who asks nothing and quotes by return email may be treating your part as a routine order. A casting supplier who asks sharp questions is treating it as an engineering problem. It is one.

Good casting suppliers ask more questions before quoting because they would rather lose a quote on speed than lose a customer on a defective batch. Match that seriousness on the buying side, and the part you send out for quote becomes the part you receive. The best result rarely comes from the fastest quote. It comes from the supplier who understood what the part had to do before setting the price.
